This past weekend we had some beautiful weather and on Sunday we decided to visit the Asheboro Zoo! We had been about quite a few years ago when we brought Hayley there to see the animals and wanted to take both girls back to experience it and my mom and dad since they are visiting. We knew there was no way we'd fit in seeing all the animals in one day so we bought a yearly pass so we can visit as much as we want to. :-)
Following the GPS we ended up on the African side and stayed there for most of the day.
We all are huge animal and nature lovers so we just took our time and enjoyed the ones we were able to see clearly. Luckily I was able to get a few great shots of the lioness.
The lion himself was pretty sleepy and didn't want to lift his head for pictures. I think he was just enjoying the beautiful day!
Here are a few fun facts about the lion I thought you'd might like to know.
1) Their roar can be heard as far away as 5 miles!
2) They are losing their habitats and now are mostly found only in Africa... whereas they used to also be in Asia and Europe.
3) They can leap as high as 36 feet!
4) The darker a lion's mane tells you how old they are... the darker it is the older they are!
5) They can sleep for up to 20 hours a day!
Chimpanzees are always fun to visit and watch, they are one of my favorites along with the gorillas. I could sit and watch them for hours! We saw the real ones too but thought these statues were just too cute to pass by!
Lemurs are super fun to watch!
The gorillas are quite animated and they know they are being watched, lol. It was extremely busy at the zoo the day we went so I was pretty grateful for my zoom lens to try to see them better.
Bamboo trees were all over and were pretty cool to walk through. That is one good thing about the park it has a lot of shady areas.
Was so lovely walking around and enjoying all the beautiful flowers and different species of animals.
I'm a sucker for turtles and tortoises, I just love them, I think they are so cute!!!
I'm not a fan of animals in captivity.... but at least these zoo offers some larger areas for them to roam then some of the other zoos I have seen.
We enjoyed watching the geyser that they recreated to resemble the ones in Yellowstone.
Here are two videos I recorded while we were there :-)
And of course the bears... so much personality.... so sweet....
Just look at that adorable face :-)
Kathleen said the desert areas was one of her favorites to explore.
It was like a big hide and seek game trying to find all the creatures that were blending into the surroundings in there.
So many neat and interesting things to see!
The air vents inside had Kathleen reliving a Marilyn Monroe moment, lol. ;-)
Now that's a bee she is sitting on I hope to never see that large in person!!!
It was such a gorgeous day, love that my parents were here to share it with us and love this picture of them with the girls.
Giraffes are always fun to observe so I recorded some video of them also :-)
Well hello there! How are you? ;-)
There was an area that happened to be closed when we were there that was an additional fee to walk out to see the giraffes "better". I wasn't a huge fan of this idea as you already pay admission to be able to see the animals and I felt charging an additional fee was not a great choice. While some families may easily be able to afford the extra fee, there are other families that cannot and have to explain that to their children. Plus no guarantees that you will even see them from the deck. :-(
Elephants...such sweet souls!
Had to take a short video of them as well!!
Zebra just hanging out along side the giraffes.
The ostrich was quite curious and was walking all over to see everyone.
I thought it would be fitting to take a picture outside The Leopard Spot gift shop based on the outfit Kathleen chose! I think it has become her official zoo attire when we visit ;-)
My parents treated the girls to stuffed animals, Hayley chose the sloth (she loves them and she's trying to find a sloth necklace so if anyone knows where we can get one please let me know)
Kathleen chose an adorable little otter :-)
After we left the zoo we decided to drive a little farther out to Siler City and eat at Hayley Bales restaurant! We went there years ago too when we used to live in NC and they spell Hayley's name the same way. :-) We always said it was her restaurant after she was born ;-). Great food and service and they even have a little gift shop to browse while you are there. :-)
What a wonderful way to end the great weekend, although it went by way too quickly!
